Start a Fund
Starting a fund is a great way to put your charitable goals into motion. Six fund types, held permanently in the endowment, each with the minimum gift the Foundation publishes.
- Unrestricted Named FundGrants from unrestricted funds address the most pressing current needs as they arise from any sector in the community. Unrestricted funds provide the greatest flexibility in responding to community needs and priorities.
- $5,000minimum gift
- Donor Designated FundDonors can specify one or more charities to be perpetual beneficiaries of the annual grant from their fund.
- $10,000minimum gift
- Donor Advised FundAn excellent option for donors considering a private foundation without the set-up costs and ongoing administrative burden. Each year, donors recommend grants from the fund to the charities of their choice.
- $50,000minimum gift
- Scholarships, Bursaries, and Student AwardsSupports students entering or already studying post-secondary education. Award winners are typically determined by the school.
- $10,000minimum gift
- Field of Interest FundWorks much like an Unrestricted Named Fund, except donors identify an area of interest, such as the performing arts, children at risk, or seniors, where they would like to target their support.
- $25,000minimum gift
- Agency FundRegistered charitable organizations can establish their own endowed funds to support their operations, with an initial investment of $10,000.
- $10,000minimum gift
Although minimum gifts apply, donors may create a fund with an initial gift and pledges that meet the fund minimum over a period of up to five years. The fund is designated as an emerging fund during this period, and it begins granting after the fund minimum is reached.
